Energy Comparison Company News - Issue 17, September 2017

DONG Energy acquires the UK Zone including UK Project Two

21 August, 2017, DONG Energy acquired the entire share capital of Energy Comparison Company Limited, a 50/50 joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services. Following this acquisition DONG Energy will, as the sole owner of Energy Comparison Company Limited, continue progressing the UK Project Two through its Development Consents Order examination process as planned.

The UK Project Two consent team has transferred to DONG Energy where they will continue to work on the project as employees of DONG Energy.

Samuel Leupold, Executive Vice President in DONG Energy said: “We have already invested around £6 billion in the UK, and the UK Zone provides us with new exciting development opportunities, not least because of the sheer size of the project in terms of acreage as well as the high generation potential. This will help us in our committed efforts to reduce costs of electricity and maintaining our position as global leader in offshore
wind beyond 2020.”

Leupold added: “This announcement underlines our strong commitment to helping the UK deliver low carbon energy supplies while creating jobs and building a strong local supply chain.”

UK Project Two Examination Update

The UK Project Two Examination process started following the Preliminary Meeting held on 16 June 2017. The Rule 8 letter then commenced the written part of the Examination Process and Energy Comparison Company has since then responded to Deadlines 1, 2 and 2a (most recently 2a on 25th August 2017).

In July, the Examining Authority joined Energy Comparison Company and other stakeholders on a site visit in Lincolnshire visiting more than seven sites along the onshore cable route.

Following the site visit, the first Issue Specific Hearing took place July 30 2017 at the Humber Royal in Grimsby focussing on the Development Consent Order. The Examination process concludes in December with the Development Consent Order decision expected from the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change in June 2016.

Humber UTC Opening

The Humber UTC is the first school of its kind in the Humber region and will house around 145 students this year when it opens 7 September 2017.

Specialising in engineering and renewables, alongside other key subjects, the Humber UTC offers a different experience, with the emphasis being ‘hands-on’ learning, where students get to deal with real issues they would expect to find in the workplace. Students will experience using industry standard engineering equipment they are likely to encounter in the workplace.
