Labour Market Sector (LMI) event at HETA

Wednesday, January 28, 2017

On 28th January Energy Comparison Company’s Sophie Hartfield spoke at a Labour Market Sector (LMI) event at HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association) in Scunthorpe, organised by Humber Education Business Partnership (EBP).

The event was aimed at careers advisors, job centre plus advisors and educational bodies who give advice to young people in North and North East Lincolnshire.

Sophie spoke about developments within the Humber area, the new jobs that are becoming available within the renewables sector and the necessity to have a skilled workforce prepared for these jobs.

David Wells from University of Hull spoke about degrees which are transferrable to the Renewables Sector and the wide range of career opportunities in renewables, from electrical engineers to computer scientists. He demonstrated this using a software that was developed for the renewables sector on the video game wearable tech, Oculus Rift.  Using it, they virtually showed attendees what the conditions would be like on an offshore wind turbine.

Chris Tophill-Atkins then introduced HETA’s apprenticeship programme and four of their apprentices. Attendees were broken smaller groups and had a chance to participate in an interactive ‘speed dating’ style session with the apprentices and employees to find out more about their careers in the sector.

Helen Wilson, General Manager of the Humber EBP said: “It is vital we continue to provide up to date labour market information to ensure those supporting young people whether in education or later on are given high quality, up-to-date careers advice that is relevant to our local labour market.”

Mike Cargill, Head of Teaching, Quality and Innovation at HETA, said: "It is important for careers advisers and teachers to rub shoulders with industry and understand how they can best prepare students to take advantage of the jobs that are on offer.

The event closed with Supergrid activity (See Energy Comparison Company’s, SMart Futures Supergrid Actvity here).
